The Ngarie Welsh Award was established in 1993 to commemorate the work of Dr. Ngaire Walsh, one of the Founders of the NFP Association in 1974 (which later became Natural Fertility NZ)

Dr Ngaire Walsh gave up her well paid position teaching physiology at the medical school in Dunedin to become NFNZ’s first National Coordinator. She was passionate about the cause and we are extremely lucky to have such a talented lady play such a vital role in the history of our organisation.nant, which could mean that you get the help you need sooner.

Natural Fertility Awareness Week 2025

MEDIA RELEASE: Natural Fertility NZ (NFNZ) is proud to announce the very first Natural Fertility Awareness Week for New Zealand. After working

MEDIA RELEASE: 18th August 2025

Natural Fertility NZ (NFNZ) is proud to announce the very first Natural Fertility Awareness Week for New Zealand. After working with thousands of women and couples for over 50 years, NFNZ thought it was about time to launch a yearly celebration – where kiwis can learn more about their fertility, and how Fertility Awareness can support them throughout their reproductive years.

Each day different topics will be covered, so follow along on the facebook page or see all  articles on the website. There is also a lolly jar competition, where you can go into the draw to win a full set of appointments.

“There are many misconceptions about Fertility Awareness based methods, so it is an exciting opportunity to separate fact from fiction, and provide information that individuals and couples can trust when it comes to making decisions about contraception”, says Lena Wells, NFNZ’s President.

NFNZ Fertility Educators teach the Sympto-thermal Method for avoiding conception, which is over 98% effective when taught by an Accredited Educator. Endorsed by Health NZ and the World Health Organisation, this method provides a viable alternative to those who either can’t or do not want to use hormonal contraception.

The knowledge gained through learning the Sympto-thermal Method can also be used to help identify any hormonal imbalances, and shorten the time to conception for those trying to conceive. There are also options for those who are breastfeeding, but as mentioned above, it is vital that these are practiced alongside the support of an Accredited Educator to avoid any unplanned pregnancies.

“Everyone’s fertility is unique, which means there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. NFNZ Educators are well equipped to work out whether one of our evidence based methods will work for someone, so all enquiries are welcome. Learning about Fertility Awareness is an empowering process, and we look forward to supporting you on your fertility journey”
