Educators are trained in the role of hormones, the menstrual cycle, all fertility awareness methods and decision-making in family planning. Group and adult education principles and how to design educational programmes to suit each group.
Training courses are held annually. Study is primarily by Distance Learning with two practical components of a week each where trainee educators attend intensive in-house training. At present the in-house training is held in Christchurch in March and June annually. It takes most trainees around six months to complete the course and this is followed by a period of supervision of around three months before Accreditation as an Educator.
The Theory Component of the course can be started at any time but trainees have said that they find it most effective to start their study around October/November as this gives them adequate time to complete the assignments and feel confident to participate in the March in-house training week; the remaining assignments are then completed before attendance at the June in-house training. On successful completion of the course, trainees undergo a period of supervision before becoming Accredited Educators.
